Ascent to the Lanin Volcano

Ascent to the Lanín Volcano
3776 mts.

Being the highest mountain in the region, the view of the surrounding landscape is unique, including Villarrica, Quetrupillán, Lonquimay (Chile) and on the Argentinian side Lakes Tromen and Quillén, the small lake of Huaca Mamuil, the headwaters of the river Malleo and the peaks of Bayo, Tres Picos and all the lower mountain ranges which make up the geography of the area. Our main objective is to enjoy panoramic views every step of the way to the hut, walking over a range of ridges among volcanic rock moon-like landscapes interspersed with glacial terminal moraines, high snow and glaciers.
Something to emphasize is the indescribably beautiful dawns and twilights. Reaching the summit isn’t always possible due to unfavourable weather conditions which, along with safety or fitness considerations monitored by the guide, determine the final outcome. Nonetheless it is still an unforgettable experience, to be enjoyed every step of the way.

Lanín Volcano is in the centre of the Andes mountain range in the province of Neuquén, in Lanín National Park. The views are impressive as soon as you start climbing the slopes of this mythical volcano - the highest in the area - and the light at sunset and dawn is a highlight of the climb. The unpredictable weather conditions sometimes prevent groups from reaching the summit, which is covered in snow and ice all year round, but the challenging climb and extensive views make it a rewarding experience even if the summit cannot be reached.

This is a demanding climb which means being in good physical shape. Some moderate training in preparation is recommended to fully enjoy this expedition.

Our meeting point will be the day before starting the ascent in San Martín de los Andes where we’ll check all the personal equipment before leaving early the next morning.

2 DAY ITINERARY:

  • Day One: Transport is provided from San Martin de los Andes to Tromen (near the base of the Lanín Volcano) where we check in with the park ranger. From there we begin walking through forest until we reach the base of the volcano (1,200m) – a distance of about 2.5km from the road. From this point we begin the Fish Spine, which will be taken at a slow, steady pace and includes stops as indicated by the guide. We eat lunch along the way and then have dinner when we arrive at the hut.
  • Day Two: We rise early, have breakfast and head for the summit, following an explanation and demonstration of how to use crampons and an ice axe. We will take only our backpacks with a warm layer of clothing, food and water.

We begin climbing through snow, with some rocky patches, slowly gaining altitude until we reach the 3,000m ‘Plato’ from where we begin the ‘Canaleta de Silencio’ which leads directly up the north face to the summit.

We have lunch at the summit and return to the hut, where we pack our remaining gear into our backpacks and begin our descent to the base of the volcano, from where we will be transported back to San Martín de los Andes. This is the longer and more tiring of the two days. Accommodation will be in your chosen option.
